I checked out a twenty-something blog not too long ago called TwentiesSuck and one post caught my eye. The blogger wrote about how kids (teens in particular) seem older than ever before- and not necessarily in a good way. I would have to agree. Never before have I witnessed kids dressing so grown, talking so perversely and generally being exposed to items of the more adult variety. Yes, every generation complains about its junior one, but there's more than meets the eye on this subject.
One could chalk it up to parents and families not raising their kids correctly. In part, this is absolutely a contributing factor. Additionally, we need to take a look at the products and services we offer such as online communities. Now, don't get me wrong, anyone who knows me realizes that I am huge fan of the Internet and social networks. But, some web communities have created an environment that is conducive to inappropriate actions and plain ol' tacky conversations.
Chat rooms and anonymity can really create an explosive mix. I went to a teen chat room on a very popular online community website to check out who might be looking for leadership opportunities this summer. The only things of interest to anyone were romantic hookups and trading insults. My post went ignored as if it were sucked into some black hole before I could hit the "send" button. I visited the 20 group and 30 group and it wasn't any better. I couldn't stomach what might be inked in the 40 group chat room. I guess what we all have to remember is that if we hear or see something we don't like in a young person, before we reprimand them, let's ask ourselves where they might have picked up such behavior and phrases. We might be surprised at how often they are actually listening.
God Bless,
